The Arches Stone Complex
The Arches Stone Complex

This project revives a historic stone complex, converting it into five independent apartments while respecting the site’s original spatial and material identity.

The intervention preserves the sculptural presence of the original masonry, allowing the textured stone walls, deep openings, and sheltered passages to define the spatial experience, while the introduction of private patios enhances intimacy and highlights the presence of original arches and vaults.

Materiality was central to the design. Rough, hand-rendered surfaces in natural earthy tones soften the transition between old and new, while in-situ concrete mosaic floors provide a quiet, durable base throughout. Iron-framed doors and windows introduce slender, contemporary lines that highlight the weight of the stone structure, and handcrafted wooden elements add warmth and tactile depth. Custom concrete benches and built-in seating reinterpret traditional forms for modern use. The result is an architecture rooted in its landscape, where intimacy, craftsmanship, and grounded material textures shape a renewed inhabitation of the historic complex.
