Our client was a pharmacist and purchased a site at centre of the village with the idea of constructing a building to combine her needs: Pharmacy at the ground floor and a house for her and her family to reside at the upper two floors.
Although very central, the site presented a particularly problematic form, as it consisted of two, regular sized orthogonal parts united with a wide corridor, the back rectangle being a residual area between other properties.
We have resolved the program qualifications by placing the living room and the two children’s bedrooms at the front of the site, at first and second floor for maximum sunlight and publicity. The master bedroom, placed at the back of the property at first floor level, was separated from the rest of the house by a small patio. The kitchen and dining area was placed at the connection between the two parts of the site.
A system of skylights was envisaged to illuminate all the interstitial spaces, corridors and stairs.
